Willard H. and Sarah Dickson George

Born in 1924 near Winnsboro in rural Wood County, Texas, the youngest child of parents of modest means, Sarah Dickson earned both her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from East Texas State in Commerce, Texas.  In 1946 when Henderson County Junior College was founded Sarah came to Athens, Texas as the Chairman of the Business Department; a position she held for the next 34 years.

Willard George was born near Athens in rural Henderson County, Texas, the youngest child of a Baptist minister and farmer.  He earned both his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from North Texas State in Denton, Texas.  During WWII Willard served in the U. S. Army Weather Corps.  Following discharge he also came to Henderson County Junior College to teach in the Business Department, where he remained until retirement in 1981.  With a combined teaching career of almost 70 years, the Georges touched literally hundreds of lives.

After working together several years the George took the plunge and married in 1962.  While they had no children of their own, children, especially those in need, were always near to their hearts.

Sarah was a lifelong Methodist, while Willard came to Methodism by marriage.  Both were active members of First United Methodist Church in Athens, TX, and served in many positions and on numerous committees.  Willard was a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lodge in Athens, and Sarah was a member of the Eastern Star.

As proud Democrats, they supported the party and its candidates with their time and their money.  Candidates often sought out Sarah and Willard for their opinions and advice on issues.  For many years Willard served as an election judge.  Willard was well known for his Fifty-Five Alive driving course.  Whether it had to do with politics or driving, Sarah was at his side bringing everyone some special snack and goodies.

Animals always held a special place in the hearts of both Sarah and Willard.  They actively supported the local animal shelter, as well as many national and world-wide organizations that advocate for animals.  They were never without a cat or two; usually a stray found somewhere and brought home.

A quiet, unassuming couple who always gave their best to whatever endeavor they undertook, the Georges are an example of integrity, commitment, and generosity.  With good financial management and Willard's investment savvy, they were able to live an abundant life and now, through their generosity, continue to help others.
